The reason for choosing 'Standard Deviation' for my company name.
In a 'Normal Distribution', commonly represented by a bell curve, over
95% of the population are within 2 standard deviations either side of the
'Norm'.
This is a bit like the majority of people who mimic sheep in their
desire to follow the rest of the flock.
To me the most
interesting people are the 4% who do not fall into this category. They are
most likely to make significant achievements, think outside the square and
understand the worth of deviating. If you are reading this, you are most likely
one of these interesting 4%.
I see a Standard Deviation in people terms and not so much as a statistical tool. To me it describes the way in which we like to be different, to deviate from the norm, without going to extremes. We might rebel by getting a tattoo, dressing differently or riding a motorbike - its all standard deviation.
The core of New Zealand is hundreds of thousands of small businesses and niche groups founded by people just like that - standard deviants. Those are the people I enjoy dealing with.
My name is Alan Millar and I started Standard Deviation Ltd here in Christchurch, New Zealand originally as a design company. The top of this first page presents a logo with the
company name and gives you quick links to each of the parts that make up my
business in their separate areas.
The logo is a fairly blunt graphic that
takes you from darkness, through Standard Deviation designs and business
solutions, into the light!
The image is about change; from dark to light,
from old to new, from average to great - if you aren't interested in changing
some aspect of yourself to improve it, you're wasting your time on this Earth!

Photography.
Its possible to build a website without any images, or with only artificial designs. However I find that people who look through a company's website want to see the company's products or services and the people who make up that company.
Its more important to let your customers and clients see who you are and what you're about, than it is to have a stylish company logo.
I like the ability for photographs to portray reality and honesty, and also to create imagery that evokes an emotion.
I have found my interest in photography has helped in the creation of images and designs on webpages. So I offer photography as another service.
